The main route is the Clinton Gulch Dam Reservoir Trail, a loop of about 2.4 miles (3.9 km).

  • Easy and Flat: The trail is relatively flat, with minimal elevation gain (around 230 feet), making it a fantastic option for families, casual walkers, or those looking for a recovery hike.

  • 360° Views: The path circles the lake. On one side, you’ll walk along the dam, with wide-open views of the surrounding mountains. On the opposite side (typically more shaded and sometimes muddy), the trail passes through the forest, offering moments of calm and cool shade.

  • Wildlife and Wildflowers: In summer, the area bursts with color as wildflowers blanket the meadows. Keep an eye out for local wildlife such as marmots and pikas.

Today, the water is managed by a company that supplies several municipalities and — interestingly — provides artificial snowmaking water to some nearby ski resorts in winter.

  • Altitude: You’re at 11,000 feet! Even though the trail is easy, the elevation can be challenging. Drink plenty of water before and during your hike, and take it slow.

  • Best Season: The ideal time to visit is from July to September, when wildflowers are in full bloom and the weather is mild. In winter, the reservoir freezes over and becomes a popular ice-fishing spot, though road access may be limited.

  • Facilities: This is a primitive site — there are no restrooms or services, so plan ahead and follow Leave No Trace principles.

  • Location: The reservoir lies along Highway 91, just south of Copper Mountain and north of Leadville, forming part of the Top of the Rockies Scenic Byway.
